Lucy: Hey Jemma! Thank you for agreeing to do this blog for our E-file Society members! Now, I may know all about you, but for those who might not, can you introduce yourself and your background?

Hey everyone! I’m Jemma and I’m a Willow Educator & salon owner based in Staffordshire.

When I was working through my teacher training 4/5 years ago, I actually thought that it would be brows and lashes that I would be teaching in person, not nails.

Then, just after the first lockdown and after 10 years of hand filing, I attended a Willow E-File Course and I saw the light!! My love for nails and nail art grew again and when Lucy asked if I would be interested in becoming a Willow Educator, I said yes.

Lucy: Tell us a bit about what took you on this Jewellery Journey?

"If you’d have told me 2 years ago that I would be heavily involved in some kind of jewellery industry, I would never have believed you!

Back in August of 2024, I really wanted to offer something else in the salon. But like many of us, I found that my current services took up a lot of my time, so I knew it couldn’t be something that took longer than an hour.

One day, I was scrolling through TikTok, when I came across Permanent Jewellery. The idea seemed perfect for salons, and I even shared the idea in our work's group chat and said, “someone at the salon should train in this!”.

Well, curiosity got the best of me, because before I knew it, I was researching like a mad woman and signed up for a course."

Lucy: So what is permanent jewellery?

"For those that don’t know, Permanent Jewellery is jewellery that is clasp-less and completely seamless. The customer picks their style of chain and can add charms, before the jewellery is sized to them and the ends of the chain are welded together. It’s designed to be worn 24/7 and whilst chunky chains are now very popular, originally it was done using very dainty charms and chains."

Lucy: How has this slotted into salon life?

"From our launch date, we were very quickly booked up and I started to see just how perfectly it slotted in alongside our Beauty treatments.

Just like with nails, you can unleash your creativity. Appointment slots are around half an hour and it is such a profitable service. We found that it brings old clients back to the salon and also introduces new faces too. We also do Permanent Jewellery at pop-up locations which gets us out and about and is always a fun change of atmosphere."

Lucy: So where is your permanent jewellery journey headed now?

"I carried on learning everything there was to know about Permanent Jewellery and 6 months later, I launched my own Course which was mainly targeted at other salon owners who also wanted to offer something new and exciting, just like me!

Today, I’m now even further down the Permanent Jewellery rabbit hole as we also run a Permanent Jewellery Supplies business from home too!

No matter how hard I’ve tried, I’ve never really been an organised, mood board, 5 year business plan kind of girl, so a lot of the things I’ve achieved in business have come from taking a risk in the here and now, seeing where it takes me next.

And just like I said, it’s the same with Permanent Jewellery. Never would I have known that it would sky rocket like it has and that I’d be here in my office at home, typing this blog, with all of our jewellery supplies on shelves next to me. It's also meant I was able to take that little bit longer off on maternity leave thanks to my odd days of offering Permanent Jewellery."

Lucy: That's amazing! And well done you by the way. For those that might be considering adding this servicing to their offerings, sorry to be cheeky but how has permanent jewellery enhanced your income?

"The earning potential is huge, take for example my last Permanent Jewellery day at the salon. I worked 10.30am-3pm and had a mix of bracelets/anklets for 1 person and a few group bookings for 2 people ( 8x30 minute appointment slots in total).

By the end of that day I had made £834 which is absolutely amazing for 4.5 hours of work.

Product costs are extremely low at around 15-25% depending on whether the customer has Sterling Silver or 14k Gold Filled.

Despite the higher than average start up costs, you can easily make back your training and stock costs in around 4 fully booked days of Permanent Jewellery."

Lucy: That's an amazing amount, actually I had assumed that the jewellery itself would be the main bulk of the cost with a small amount for labour, but I can see how this has huge income potential. If someone is hoping to add this to their services, how can they find more information?

"If you’d like to take a further look at how much set up costs and which machine options there are, just follow the link below:

If you’re ready to start to introduce something new, you can enrol on my online Permanent Jewellery Course where Willow Society members can save 10% by using code “SOCIETY10” at checkout."

Lucy: What does your course cover?

"In the course, I’ll show you exactly how I built my own business and how I introduced it to our salon.

The course is broken down into clear, step-by-step modules that guide you through everything you need to know. From understanding the tools and techniques to confidently offering Permanent Jewellery as a paid service.

Each module is easy to follow, professionally structured, and designed to help you build real confidence and skills. With a mix of video demos, machine comparisons, stock links and quizzes, you'll get everything you need to succeed, at your own pace."

A note from Lucy:

I have seen lots of socials about how to increase income without dedicating more hours to nail clients. Many of us want something new & exciting that fits seamlessly into salon life, that crucially will also add revenue. This is why we invited Jemma to talk about her Jewellery venture to share in her success. If you're curious and wish to experience it for yourself, you can head to Jemma's socials
